Benedict Vilakazi has expressed disappointment in Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and how he conceded in the side’s 1-1 league draw against Polokwane City last weekend.

Chiefs had been leading the game 1-0 at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium when City attacker Giovanni Philander scored from a direct corner kick late in the game to deny them full points.

The result, coupled with outcomes in other games, saw Amakhosi drop to fourth place on the Betway Premiership log with 12 points in six outings, eight points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played eight matches.

“I’m disappointed; why am I disappointed is that when we call your name to go represent us at the national team, and then you come and then make a mistake like this, then I don’t know. I’m not saying he’s not a keeper who should not concede goals, but not like this. Like this, no, it’s uncalled for,” Vilakazi said, as quoted by iDiski Times.

“I’m trying to put nice words in the action itself because it’s an easy thing. Step up, stand in that pole, the ball hits you here [on the body], you get the ball, done, finished. But Petersen, I don’t know what he was thinking, and again, it shows me that he didn’t have that eye contact with the ball from that distance, with that corner flag swinging in coming here.

“I mean, really, he should see that. I mean, your action, you are covering. I know maybe somebody will argue and say the ball had power. I get it. But you are saying that seeing that ball from that corner flag… It’s possible.

“I know sometimes these boys have got power; they can bend those balls, but this one, I think even I, at my age, could have done better. We can see that he was there in the pole, but how he got there- he went there wrongly because his body should protect.

“I mean, hit the pole with your shoulder and then get the ball. But if you’re going to position yourself as he did, chances are it’s going to in, and that’s why they conceded,” they concluded.

Da Cruz’s tactics questioned

Kaizer Chiefs remain unbeaten in the Betway Premiership after six matches, but Junior Khanye has questioned Fernando Da Cruz’s approach and believes the coach faces a difficult task in his pursuit of silverware with Amakhosi.

The former Amakhosi midfielder stressed that his assessment was based purely on his reading of the football and that he does not analyse matches based on popular opinion.

“Look, I am a football person. I look at football scenarios with the eye of a football person, and I believe in stating things the way I see them in my analysis, without being influenced by what the majority says. That’s just me, and I can’t change that for anyone,” Khanye said.

“I also don’t analyse with the intention of attacking anyone. I state my opinions based on what I see and what I think is going to happen, and on many occasions, most of the things I said have happened.

“When I speak about football, I speak my mind because, at the end of the day, it’s my opinion. At the same time, I respect the opinions of others when we discuss football, and I believe that’s how it should be for everyone.

Khaye then turned his attention to Da Cruz’s appointment at Chiefs, revealing that he still has reservations about the Portuguese mentor and his tactical approach.

“When it comes to Chiefs, I still have question marks about bringing in that coach. To me, he is a coach who is more concerned about not conceding, hence his team is always defending. Even if it means putting five defenders in his line-up, he will do it as long as he believes it is the right strategy to get him the result he wants,” he continued.

“Just look at the most recent match against Polokwane City. His team was too defensive, and they were almost caught by surprise because, in my opinion, Polokwane were the more attacking team.

“For me, the coach is not good enough. I don’t think there is any trophy that he is going to win for Kaizer Chiefs,” Khanye concluded.
