Chiefs latest news as they break
Leaking Chiefs: Lack of quality
A former Orlando Pirates coach says that when a defensively minded team such as Kaizer Chiefs concedes goals, it may indicate a lack of quality in some areas.
It is uncommon for a defensively minded team like the current Amakhosi side to be so vulnerable, even when defending a basic set-piece delivery.
Despite using an ultra-cautious, heavily fortified tactical set-up, the side continues to concede costly goals from routine set pieces. The Soweto giants’ defensive weaknesses were exposed once again on the continental stage, demonstrating that fielding numerous defensive players is ineffective if the fundamentals of defending a dead-ball situation are neglected.
Under head coach Fernando Da Cruz, Amakhosi have increasingly adopted a conservative, risk-averse system. Critics and fans alike have noted that the team has fielded as many as seven or eight defensively minded players in an effort to suppress opposition attacks. However, this numerical emphasis on defence has not translated into defensive effectiveness.
The clearest indictment of this approach came on Saturday in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary tie against Zambia’s Red Arrows FC.
Although Chiefs frustrated the hosts in open play, a routine corner exposed the Amakhosi backline. The team failed to deal with the initial delivery and defend the second ball, allowing Alassane Diarra to score from close range and secure a 1–0 victory. Chiefs were left to reflect on a disappointing defeat.

“I think it has to do with quality as well. It always comes down to quality and experience,” Owen Da Gama told KickOff.
“You can be as defensively minded as possible, but if the quality is not there, it becomes difficult.”
Chiefs right not to pay R10M!
The local transfer window is rarely short of drama, but the recent standoff between TS Galaxy and Kaizer Chiefs over the future of the Rockets’ breakout star has sparked fierce debate across South African football.
At the centre of this multi-million-rand dispute is Galaxy’s dynamic 21-year-old winger, Seluleko Mahlambi.
After Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr. submitted an opening bid of R4 million, Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi rejected the offer outright on Metro FM, publicly setting a minimum price of R10 million for the prized player. Social media users quickly reacted, with critics accusing Galaxy of overvaluing local talent.
Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego believes R10 million is too high for a young player who has yet to reach his full potential.
“The boy has not played much in the PSL, so I do not know whether he will be able to help Chiefs win the league. They would be paying half of the prize money awarded for winning the league for one player. Chiefs need players who can return them to where they belong, so I do not know if he is worth R10 million,” Mashego tells KickOff.

“R10 million sounds like a lot of money for a player who has performed well for TS Galaxy for one season. Did he really set the scene alight last season? Did he perform at the level of Rele Mofokeng and others?
“The boy did very well last season, but will he end Chiefs’ league title drought, maybe if they are also going to sign other players? Spending R10 million on one player will not help a club improve.”
Red Arrows have 8/10 chances to beat Chiefs
Following his side’s 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs, Red Arrows coach Chisi Mbewe believes they have an eight-out-of-10 chance of advancing at the expense of the South African side.
This past weekend, Red Arrows claimed a 1-0 home win in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie.
However, Red Arrows secured an advantage ahead of the second leg in Durban on Friday, 23 October. Their coach, Mbewe, is brimming with confidence, suggesting that his side are well placed to eliminate Chiefs and secure a place in the Confederation Cup group stage.
“We are very confident. This is a competition; we shouldn’t give it away. I think we’re in this competition to compete, and I think even coming into this game, we had planned,” said Mbewe, according to Zambian publication Bolayapazed.

“The goals that we actually wanted to score in this game were three goals. That’s what was our target, and I think you could even see the chances that we created. Again, it’s in our hands. It’s up to us to lose it or to win it. So we go there, we fight, and we ensure that we qualify for the group stage.
“I can assure you that this time around, Red Arrows is qualifying for the group stage. On a scale of one to ten? I would say eight out of ten.”
