Coach admits Arrows draw was ‘fair result’

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Dillon Sheppard feels his team’s goalless draw against Golden Arrows was a fair result as they did not finish off their opportunities.

Chiefs were frustrated as they drew a second straight game and while Sheppard thinks they applied themselves well, he admits they let themselves down in key areas of the pitch.

“Very good first half. The way we controlled the game…I think their only two chances came from a little error at the back but the way we controlled the game in the first half, in terms of what is to come, is very, very good,” he told SoccerBeat.

“All the guys applied themselves and going into the second half, the game went a little bit away from us. We started giving away possession a little bit too easily and they came and had a couple of chances towards the end so I think it was a fair result but we deserved to win if you look at the best of the chances.”

Meanwhile, Sheppard has praised goalkeeper Renaldo Leander who made his competitive debut for the club against Arrows on Sunday.

Leaner was handed the opportunity in the wake of Brandon Petersen’s injury and made a crucial early save to deny Junior Dion, keeping his team in the game as Chiefs went on to keep a rare clean sheet.

“Very good, his leadership at the back, a couple of crucial saves to keep us in the game, very good,” Sheppard said of Leaner’s performance.

“You know that is why you have a squad. Players get injured and others step in and take their chances.

“Very happy for him, he has come in with a lot of confidence as you saw, he kept a clean sheet today so very happy for him.”

Chiefs goalkeeper backed to shine at Naturena

Former Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare is another one who feels Renaldo Leaner is going to be a huge success at Chiefs.

The two played together at Babina Niko and following Leaner’s move to Amakhosi, he believes now is the time to stake claim to the position after getting his chance following Brandon Petersen’s injury.

“He can perform. If you perform well with Sekhukhune and they call you to the national team, it’s the same football. There is no difference. It’s the same South African football, the same PSL football,” he told FARPost.

“The problem with big teams is that you need to be more focused because big teams do not have small games. In every game, everyone wants to play 150 percent because they are playing against big teams.

“For the performance now, it is [about] how you believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself that you can do it, no one is coming to do it for you because in football you must believe in yourself first.”
