Kaizer Chiefs News as they break

Why is Ngcobo struggling to start?

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has addressed Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s lack of game time at the club, revealing what the talented midfielder needs to do to break into the starting line-up.

Ngcobo has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Da Cruz, who took over the coaching hot seat ahead of the 2026/27 PSL season following the departure of co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.

The 54-year-old French mentor arrived at Amakhosi under high expectations from fans desperate for a return to the club’s glory days and trophy contention. However, Da Cruz has faced a demanding start to life in Naturena, with the side producing inconsistent performances in recent matches.

In his bid to find a winning formula, Da Cruz has frequently rotated his matchday squad, leaving several players on the sidelines. Among those struggling to secure a regular spot is Ngcobo, one of the longest-serving members of the current Chiefs squad.

“Nothing happened; there is no issue with Mshini. There are players who play the same position as him, like [Mduduzi] Shabalala,” Da Cruz said.

“For example, Shabalala is performing well. Mshini just needs to continue working, and if he continues working a lot, he will get his chance, as he already had against Golden Arrows in the MTN8,” he added.

Da Cruz bemoans missed chances in Chiefs CAF CC exit

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz bemoaned the side’s missed chances after their CAF Confederation Cup defeat to Red Arrows on penalties on Friday night.

There was a lot to ponder for the Amakhosi who trailed 1-0 from the first-leg, but were able to get back on the night through Bradley Cross in the second half. With a match of this nature and the level of the opposition, the coach felt his side should have had three or four goals on the night.

“We dominated all the game, we created a lot of chances, we lose this game in the penalties, but I think we lost the game before because we missed too much chances, we only scored one goal. Normally, we must win this game three- four zero,” Da Cruz told SABC Sport.

“No, the team played with confidence, played with a lot of personality, with the ball, without the ball so with what we showed today it’s not an issue of confidence,” Da Cruz said.

The attention now turns to Tuesday for the Amakhosi as TS Galaxy awaits in the last 16 of the Carling Knockout in the lead-up to the season’s first Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates.

“For sure, on Tuesday we have a game in Carling Cup, today we assembled the team, tomorrow we leave for Johannesburg and after from Sunday we prepare Carling Knockout to be qualified for the next round,” Da Cruz added.

Motale on Khumalo’s appointment

Bafana Bafana legend Edward Motale has opened up on Doctor Khumalo being appointed as Vice-Chairperson of the SAFA Technical Committee.

“I would say congratulations to Dr, Doctor Khumalo, we’re very proud of him. I know and I hope he is going to do, not better, but best for our football in the country. It shows that our football is going into the right direction by appointing a former player,” Motale told KickOff.

“Because before it was only (for the elite), I’m happy, at least we now have our own who is representing us. I have a belief that he is going to take us to the next level. He has played the game and has walked the game.

“All these years in all our national teams, whether it is Under-17, Under-19, senior team, when they line-up or coming out of the tunnel, there’s not even a legend that is greeting them, just to give them motivation.

“Not to interfere with the coach, just to say, ‘Boys, well done, I’ve walked this road, don’t get intimidated’ (etcetera), and you’re done. Hopefully there will be more legends or the people who played the game. Some positions don’t (necessarily) need academics or how rich you are.

“Some positions just need the person who walked the walk. The likes of Danny Jordaan can sit there at the office, it’s fine but on the ground definitely we need people who walked the walk and who will talk the talk. Because if I say something to a (national team) player and say ‘Boy! This is how you stand’ he will believe in me, because he knows I’ve walked that path.

“But when some prominent guy comes because he’s rich and wants to tell a player what to do, it gets in this ear and goes out the other ear. So I’m happy and I hope more people who played the game will be part of SAFA like other countries,” Motale, a former member of the 1996 AFCON winning Bafana squad added.
