Kwinika fires up Amakhosi ahead of new campaign

Zitha Kwinika has featured in all of Kaizer Chiefs’ opening fixtures of the 2026/27 season and the vice-captain appears energised ahead of what promises to be a defining campaign at Naturena.

Having penned a new two-year deal that keeps him at the club until June 2028, the experienced centre-back goes into this season with both security and a point to prove.

The defender has spoken with conviction about the standards he expects Chiefs to set this term — echoing the message he delivered at the end of the last campaign, when he urged his teammates to build on the progress made and set higher standards heading into the new season.

With Fernando Da Cruz now at the helm, there is a fresh sense of structure around Naturena, and Kwinika appears determined to play his part in helping the squad deliver on its ambitions.

“Obviously, Richards Bay [next match] is a difficult team to play against, yes, we give them the respect, but we also have our objectives, so we know what we expect and we have prepared well for them,” he said as per KickOff.

“This season, we are on a different mission of saying the games that we need to collect points (from) are such games (against Richards Bay).”

Kaizer Chiefs told where to strengthen

There is reason for cautious optimism at Naturena. Chiefs have made a positive start to the Betway Premiership campaign, sitting second in the standings after three rounds of matches, but former Amakhosi winger Thabiso Malatsi is not getting carried away — and he has been candid about where the club’s recruitment work remains unfinished.

“They are coming alright, even though I will be honest, in my opinion, we’re still lacking a lot. I believe we still need two strikers, goal-poachers. I mean the snipers. If we can get two of those and wingers, because we don’t have wingers,” Malatsi told KickOff.

The assessment is a pointed one — and one that will resonate with many supporters who watched Chiefs struggle for clinical edge in the final third last season.
