Petersen welcomes Leaner competition

Club captain Brandon Petersen has publicly endorsed the arrival of Renaldo Leaner, insisting the extra competition in the goalkeeping department can only lift standards at Naturena.

Leaner joined on a free transfer after leaving Sekhukhune United, one of several additions as coach Fernando Da Cruz continues to reshape his squad, and Petersen told Business Report that he rates the new man highly.

“I think it’s a good signing for the team. Renaldo is a phenomenal goalkeeper. I’ve known him since we were very young, I was his head boy in high school and we’ve always had a good relationship,” said Petersen as per Business Report.

The two go back a long way. They attended the same high school, where Petersen was head boy while Leaner was coming through the age groups, and both graduated from the Ajax Cape Town academy, now Cape Town Spurs.

“It’s been great for me to see how he grew as a goalkeeper coming from the Ajax Academy and how he fought his way back into the PSL to be where he is today. It’s a great opportunity for him as well,” added Petersen.

Petersen says he has followed that journey closely and has no issue with the challenge it brings to his own position, arguing that pushing one another sharpens the whole department regardless of who starts on the day.

Musona relishes emotional Kaizer Chiefs reunion

Knowledge Musona will line up against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday, and the Zimbabwean has made no secret of what the occasion means to him.

Now 36 and playing for Scottland FC, the striker known to Amakhosi supporters as the ‘Smiling Assassin’ faces his former employers in the third edition of the Toyota Cup on Sunday.

This was my first home outside Zimbabwe and I am grateful to Kaizer Chiefs because they gave me the platform when I was young to showcase my talent,” said Musaona, who joined Chiefs from the Aces Youth Soccer Academy in 2009.

The numbers explain the affection. Across two spells at the club, Musona scored 40 goals and supplied 13 assists in 88 appearances, form that earned him a move to TSG Hoffenheim in Germany.

He went on to play in Belgium with KV Oostende and Anderlecht, later featured in the Saudi Pro League, and eventually chose to return closer to home with Scottland FC.
