Massive blow as Chiefs lose star for eight weeks!

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has confirmed that star signing Langelihle Phili suffered an ankle injury and will be sidelined for around eight weeks.

“Phili is the bad news of this week; he got injured. He will be out for around eight weeks,” he told the media.

“But we trust in our available players.”

Chiefs were held to a 2-2 by Richards Bay on Wednesday evening, having lost their last three consecutive ties at the Natal Richboys.

The point saw them drop to third place with eight points from four games, two behind bitter rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

How Chiefs were exposed

Kaizer Chiefs’ 2-2 draw with Richards Bay FC on Wednesday night exposed glaring defensive mistakes, tactical changes forced by injuries, and five big questions for the Glamour Boys moving forward.

Self-inflicted defensive errors saw Chiefs drop two points in the Premier Soccer League, leaving Amakhosi winless in two consecutive matches following their draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Twenty-year-old Nqaba Xulu scored twice for the hosts, while Amakhosi replied through midfielders Lebohang Maboe from the penalty spot and Siphesihle Ndlovu. New signing Faiz Abrahams offered an encouraging glimpse of what he could bring to coach Fernando Da Cruz’s side.

Where did Chiefs get it wrong?

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz singled out the mistakes after their 2-2 draw against Richards Bay FC on Wednesday evening.

The Amakhosi had their work cut out against the Natal Rich Boys and were behind at halftime after a first-half brace by Nqaba Xulu put the hosts in the driving seat, with Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen gifting the hosts their first goal.

It is points dropped for the Soweto giants, who lost a bit of ground with the early pace-setters on the Premiership table and now lie third on the table, having been dethroned by Mamelodi Sundowns.

“Yes, we conceded that goal, but we continued to play well. We made a good first half, but we gave too many gifts to the opponents, and we lost too many points,” Da Cruz told SuperSport TV.

“To continue to play like that because we made a good first half, but it’s not normal to concede two goals like that when we play this type of football, when we played so well, so I asked them to continue to play well and to continue to push, push,” he continued.

Asanele Velebayi came off the bench to make a contribution, which delighted the Chiefs coach once again.

“It’s the beginning of the season, our substitute’s player when they come in, they do a very good job. We need to keep this, we need to keep this mindset because we don’t need eleven players but we need a complete squad to look forward,” da Cruz said.

“Yes, we lost two points today because we played a very good game and we were better than the opponent. It’s not that the opponent was better, but we made too many mistakes.”
