Da Cruz welcomes public backing by management

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has thanked Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr and the club’s board for publicly backing him following their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup last week.

The statement of support came after Amakhosi’s continental campaign came to an end, with questions surrounding the team’s performances and results. Da Cruz has now explained that the club’s backing reflects ongoing discussions between the technical team and management rather than being based solely on individual results.

The Frenchman revealed that he meets with Motaung Jr every three weeks to assess the team and discuss the club’s broader project, insisting that the focus remains on improving performances regardless of whether Chiefs win, draw or lose.

“First thing I would like to thank the club for the statement, I would like to thank the Sporting Director and the whole board for the statement they made. And then you must know, it’s very clear, inside the club, every three weeks, we have a meeting with the Sporting Director to speak about the team and the project of the club,” the tactician stated.

“The confidence he’s given us is very important for the daily work that we do, where even if we win, draw or lose, we need to analyse the situation very well.

“The board is there and the Sporting Director is there every day to see the commitment of the staff and the entire technical staff. When we analyse the situation you can see we have been unlucky because during all our draws that we made, we deserved to win.

“In terms of injuries, we have been very unlucky, we have many injured with contact injuries, so we’re very unlucky related to that,” he concluded.

Chiefs urged to go for international star

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune believes that Elias Mokwana can be a valuable asset to Amakhosi as an additional attacking option.

Mokwana, 27, is currently a free agent after parting ways with Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis last month having spent last season on loan at Saudi Pro League outfit Al Hazem. After a proposed move to Wydad Athletic Club fell through, the Bafana Bafana winger is said to have been offered to Chiefs, a possibility Khune has welcomed for his former side.

“Definitely! Mokwana reminds me of Jabu “Shuffle” Pule back then, formerly then, but now Mahlangu. Very skilful, he’s not shy to take on players. He can create goals; he can score goals,” he told Soccerzone

“So, he’ll be a great addition to the team because of his experience, continental experience. These young boys will be looking up to him, and he’ll be holding their hands to say, ‘guys, come with me, let’s go back to continental football I know what it’s all about’.

“And definitely he’ll be a great addition and take the club forward,” Khune added.

Chiefs postpone their fixture

Kaizer Chiefs have explained the postponement of their upcoming Betway Premiership clash previously scheduled for 4 November.

The Glamour Boys were originally scheduled to host AmaZulu on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, at the iconic FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, with kick-off set for 19:30.

The decision to call off the midweek clash comes due to a scheduling conflict with South Africa’s upcoming local government elections, which have forced a temporary pause on top-flight domestic action.
