Chiefs signed Cape Town winger!

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye feels new signing Faiz Abrahams’ style doesn’t fit Amakhosi.

Abrahams, 21, joined Amakhosi this month on a season-long loan deal from Stellenbosch FC, with Chiefs having an option to buy him at the end of the season.

He made his debut for the Glamour Boys from the bench in the come-from-behind 2-2 Betway Premiership draw away at Richards Bay on Wednesday, playing in the last 24 minutes of the game.

Khanye felt the crosses weren’t effective and that he’s not sure if Abrahams really suits the side’s style of play.

“It’s important when you sign players to look at how the club plays, but obviously Kaizer Chiefs’ style of play now, I don’t think it’s something they are concerned with,” he said, as quoted by iDiski Times.

“Every available player, they think, will suit their style of play. The guy is a typical Cape Town winger, whereby he’s more of a crosser. In the second half, Kaizer Chiefs had ball possession; they should have scored a lot of goals, but a cross is anybody’s ball. It seems like it was the instruction of the coach when he put him in to play crosses.

“I haven’t watched him a lot at his previous club, but I saw him today, and he wanted to cross every ball he received. And who was he crossing to? Duba in the box. They lack a natural number 10, someone who can carry the team. They lack a wing-forward who will cut in and score goals. Sometimes you don’t have to cross.

“You have to take responsibility, and I understand he plays under instructions, but sometimes players are the coach on the field. These are professional players; if they say cross and you are not looking, who’s in the box, and there’s Duba alone against four tall people. It showed that the coach believes in crosses,” he concluded.

Star chasing national team slot

Kaizer Chiefs Ladies new signing Refilwe Maseko has made an admission about eyeing a return to Banyana Banyana.

Maseko signed with the SAFA Gauteng Provincial Women’s League side in July and has featured in two matches for Chiefs with one goal under her belt so far. She has helped the Glamour Girls maintain the top spot in the league with 46 points in 20 matches so far in their first campaign in the semi-professional ranks.

“Oh, definitely, [I would like to play for Banyana Banyana],” she told the media.

“I think, like the other players said, now playing for the national team is a privilege. It is a goal I think every player should have to represent the country out there. So yes, I am looking for a return to the squad.

“The first time, I think I was 17, I played U20 World Cup qualifiers, and in 2022 I played in the Banyana COSAFA team. I think we played Zambia in that final; unfortunately, we lost, but it was a wonderful experience.

“It was a different kind of platform playing against all African players. They’re very strong, very physical. It’s a different ball game compared to maybe the league that we play here. So, I actually learned a lot.

“And also playing in the COSAFA team helps you meet new players and network in terms of understanding football, the type of football played out there, and that there’s space to learn more than just what you see in your own country.”

No way! Petersen defended

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Thembinkosi Biyela says there is no way the club’s current captain, Brandon Petersen, can be a bad goalkeeper after just two months.

According to Biyela, being left out of the World Cup at the last minute has hit Petersen very hard.

Biyela says the Amakhosi supporters can play a big role in helping lift the goalkeeper back to his best by offering him support instead of criticism.

While the goalkeeper had an impressive previous campaign, his recent performances have drawn a lot of criticism from the club’s supporters.

“This World Cup thing has hit him very hard. A good player cannot become a bad player overnight. He is making silly mistakes because he is now demotivated. We need to uplift his spirit, motivate him, and give him all the support he needs,” Biyela told KickOff.

“Let’s not write the boy off. Let’s motivate him. He has already proven to us last season that he is a very good goalkeeper if fans are behind him.

“Remember he was supposed to be one of the three goalkeepers we took to the World Cup, and that’s non-negotiable. He was one of the best goalkeepers last season. Remember, players for the World Cup are picked based on form. He can’t be a bad goalkeeper just after two months.

“He is one of our best goalkeepers in the country. All he needs is our motivation. Let’s give him confidence.”
