Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has leapt to the defense of goalkeeper Brandon Petersen who has come under scrutiny in recent matches.

Petersen, 31, enjoyed a good season last campaign where he kept 15 clean sheets helping his side finish in the top three in the Betway Premiership.

However, the Amakhosi captain has endured a challenging start to the current term with costly mistakes, most recently leaking in a soft goal in the 2-2 draw against Richards Bay. His mistake was also deemed the reason the side was knocked out of the MTN8 by Golden Arrows in the quarter-finals.

“He says Brandon also made mistakes last season,” Da Cruz opened up, through his interpreter, in a presser.

“But also made a very good season last season, he got a lot of points for his team. He says he trusts him at 100%.

“He’s our captain so he trusts him. He will discuss this with him [ahead of this weekend game against Siwelele] this weekend, but our game model will not change.

“We’ll continue with our normal game.”

Da Cruz on Mosimane’s appointment as Bafana Bafana coach

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz has given his take on Pitso Mosimane’s return as Bafana Bafana head coach, succeeding Hugo Broos following the Belgian’s successful stint in charge of the national team.

Mosimane has officially taken over the hot seat after he was unveiled to the public on Tuesday morning at the SAFA House. The veteran coach was appointed to replace Broos at Bafana Bafana following the end of the Belgian’s contract.

Broos left Bafana after spending six years in charge of the South African senior men’s national team, having bagged the job back in 2021.

The return of the former Mamelodi Sundowns tactician has evoked a lot of excitement from football lovers in SA.

Da Cruz has joined the widespread conversation about Mosimane and called for patience with the former Al Ahly man as he starts his tenure.

The Chiefs coach was addressing the media at the Naturena Village. This was ahead of the club’s Betway Premiership clash against Siwelele FC. The game will be staged at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.

“He’s a coach that had a lot of success at club level. He has won a lot of titles. So he has the qualities to be in this position today,” Da Cruz stated.

“It’s good to have a local coach [in the national team]. But it is important that we give him time because now he is taking over a heritage from another coach. He will need time to set up his things.”
