Chiefs striker on frustrating debut season

Kaizer Chiefs striker Etiosa Ighodaro has opened up on his “frustrating” debut campaign at Naturena, while declaring himself ready to deliver a standout 2026/27 season.

The Nigerian frontman signed for Amakhosi in August last year following his departure from the African reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns. However, his maiden season at Chiefs proved challenging, as he only managed to make six appearances across all competitions.

“Last season was quite frustrating for me because of injuries, but that is behind me now. I am looking forward to a great season. Hopefully, you’ll see the best of me. I am pushing myself hard to make the club and the supporters proud,” he told the team’s media team.

“I really benefited from pre-season because I didn’t play a lot last season, so I needed the minutes in the practice games to build my confidence.

“Preparations are going well. We weren’t satisfied with getting only one point in our last game [against Richards Bay], and we are working hard to make sure we don’t slip up on Sunday. Siwelele play aggressively with a lot of commitment, so we are ready for their physicality. But we believe in ourselves and our own ability to come out on top.”

New deal for Maart!

Austrian club SV Ried has rewarded South African midfielder Yusuf Maart with a new deal. The former Kaizer Chiefs captain has penned a new two-year contract, keeping him at the club until June 2028.

“He has signed an improved two-year contract,” Maart’s representatives, P Management, informed Soccer Laduma.

The previous contract was due to expire next year, but the Austrian outfit has moved swiftly to secure the midfielder’s long-term future — a clear indication of the value he has brought to the club since his arrival.

Maart has played 44 matches for SV Ried since joining the club from Amakhosi last year, establishing himself as a key figure in the squad and repaying the faith shown in him by the Austrian outfit with consistent performances in the heart of midfield.

Lilepo confident Lilepo will deliver

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Glody Lilepo has backed Amakhosi to have a successful season under Fernando Da Cruz.

“I am happy with the team. They have signed a lot of good players. The coach has selected many new players who can bring change to the team,” Lilepo told Soccer Laduma.

“They have already played some games, so now we have to give them time and wish them good luck. We will see how they finish the league. But I strongly believe that the team can do well,” he concluded.
