Mayo tipped to shine

Brandon Petersen has revealed that Kaizer Chiefs teammate Khanyisa Mayo is one of the players who have a lot of confidence, so he would not let last season’s difficulties affect him mentally.

Mayo has signed a permanent deal with Amakhosi despite having a tough campaign last term while on loan from Algerian side CR Belouizdad. Currently out nursing an injury, Mayo is probably itching to bounce back and show that he can deliver for the Soweto giants who have shown their faith in him.

“We know Mayo’s qualities (from) the time he played in Cape Town and when he played for Belouizdad. It showed you that the quality is there and it’s normal for a player to sometimes go through a dip and all of that, but the most important thing is how you pick yourself up,” Petersen said in a presser.

“He’s sidelined now, he’s injured, but he is a good guy. He’s a hard worker and he’s a guy who is full of confidence. For me, it’s easy to pick up a guy like that because they are hardly down, whether they are doing well or not.

“They believe in their qualities and what they can do on the field. On the day, if it doesn’t show up, there is another time to try and keep going. For me, everyone knows the qualities that Mayo has and we are looking forward to him returning to the field of play.”

Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen is looking forward to their MTN8 return though he’s admitted they are facing a tough challenge against Golden Arrows.

After a two-season ‘hiatus’, Amakhosi make a return to the competition for the first time since 2023/24 when they take on Abafana Bes’thende at FNB stadium on Sunday, 9 August.

It has been a while since we have been in the MTN8 so obviously, I am very happy,” Petersen told the Amakhosi media team.

“We missed out the past two seasons which is something that we don’t want to experience again and we are excited to be back in it.

“Kaizer Chiefs should be competing for this trophy every season and I think our absence has given us extra motivation to do well this time.

“We are looking to hit the ground running and hopefully go all the way.”

Phili told what to expect at Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Thuso Phala has discussed the ‘pressure’ that new signing Langelihle Phili will be facing as a marquee signing.

Chiefs have not had a big signing, where they put out all the stops, in a while, after Stellenbosch reportedly valued Phili at R16 million.

Amakhosi got the deal over the line in a cash-plus-players transfer to secure the 21-year-old, after they sacrificed Ashley du Preez and Given Msimango to move to the Cape Winelands, for the former Amajita star.

“The pressure, I don’t even want to explain it, already playing for Kaizer Chiefs there’s pressure. He comes as a marquee signing, so a lot is expected from him. The expectations are very high from the fans, the expectations are very high from the club since they released two players and spent money on him,” Phala said on omniaudioafrica YouTube Channel.

“But I’m positive. If you’re a big player, you get there and get thrown in at the deep end, you get there and you swim with the sharks. So it’s his chance to swim with the sharks.

“If he believes he is going to be a big player at Chiefs, this is the moment you challenge yourself in life, that you are at this point, it’s a make or break, from the moment he made a decision to join Chiefs. It’s your time to shine ntwana (boy) but I believe he’s going to do well, very comfortable on the ball, very skillful, speedy, he’s got an eye for goal, that’s all you need as a winger,” the former Bafana winger added.
