Here is a round-up of the biggest stories involving Kaizer Chiefs over the last 24 hours as the Soweto giants returned to winning ways while debate continues around their players’ absence from the South Africa national football team squad.

Lilepo strike secures crucial Chiefs win

Kaizer Chiefs ended a run of four straight defeats with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Durban City FC at FNB Stadium.

Congolese winger Glody Lilepo produced the decisive moment in the 68th minute, firing into the top corner after a neat exchange with Mfundo Vilakazi. The result lifted Amakhosi to fifth place on the Premier Soccer League table with 33 points, keeping their hopes of a top-three finish alive.

Kaze identifies areas Chiefs must improve

Despite the win, co-coach Cedric Kaze admitted his side must improve their ball movement and attacking transitions.

Kaze felt Chiefs controlled large parts of the match but were too slow when progressing the ball into attacking areas, which allowed Durban City to stay organised defensively. The coach believes correcting those issues will be key if the Glamour Boys want to build momentum in the coming fixtures.

Pirates legend backs Broos’ Chiefs snub

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Innocent Mayoyo has defended Hugo Broos after the South Africa national football team coach named a 38-man preliminary squad without any Chiefs players.

Mayoyo argued the current form of the Amakhosi squad does not justify national team call-ups and even suggested it could affect their chances of making the upcoming World Cup squad.

Benni McCarthy hopes Chiefs return to title race

Meanwhile, Benni McCarthy says South African football is at its best when Chiefs compete strongly with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Bafana Bafana legend praised Pirates’ current title push but admitted he would like to see Chiefs also challenging at the top, arguing that the league becomes more exciting when the country’s three biggest clubs are all in contention.
