DStv Diski Challenge: Pirates and Sundowns emulate senior sides with tight title race

Published on by

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns DStv Diski Challenge teams are mirroring their senior sides as they are also in a very tight title race.

While the senior Pirates team enjoy a one-point advantage over Sundowns, their reserve team is level on 51 points with the young Brazilians, with both sides having won by big margins on Sunday.

Pirates thrashed Siwelele FC 5-0 at the UJ Soweto Campus on Saturday with an own goal opening the floodgates before Mpho Padime, Seth Green, Samukele Zikalala and skipper Lebo Mohlala completed the big win.

That saw them move top of the table with 51 points from 22 matches, level with second-placed Sundowns, who have an inferior goal difference and have played one goal more.

Sundowns kept pace with Pirates with an emphatic 6-0 thrashing of AmaZulu FC on Sunday with PSL stars Kutlwano Letlhaku, Siyabonga Mabena scoring the first and second goal before a brace from Bennet Mokoena gave them a 4-0 lead at the break.

Upon resumption, Mokoena completed his hat-trick for 5-0 before Gomolemo Kekana added further gloss on the score line with the sixth goal in Rustenburg.

Pirates now just enjoy a +1-goal advantage over Sundowns although with their game in hand, the Buccaneers can open up a three-point lead if they win.

Meanwhile, outgoing champions Kaizer Chiefs continued with their struggles as they could only draw 1-1 with Golden Arrows, Siphamandla Shangase breaking the deadlock for Abafana Besthende before Imaam Hendricks equalised for Amakhosi for a share of the spoils.

The result leaves Chiefs in fifth position with 33 points from 23 games, 18 points behind the league leaders.

In other results, Durban City’s poor form continued with a 1-0 loss to Marumo Gallants while Polokwane City secured their first victory of the year following a 2-1 triumph over Sekhukhune United as Magesi FC beat Chippa United 1-0 and AmaZulu FC played out a 1-1 draw with Richards Bay.
