Kaizer Chiefs star told to wake up from slumber – ‘How many chances does he want?’

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has called on attacker Mduduzi Shabalala to step up and demonstrate greater maturity and decisiveness on the field.

Shabalala was included in the starting lineup on Sunday afternoon as the Glamour Boys secured a much-needed victory at FNB Stadium, ending a difficult run of form.

Under significant pressure after a four-match losing streak in all competitions, Amakhosi managed to claim all three points. Glody Lilepo’s 69th-minute goal was enough to seal a narrow 1-0 win over Durban City, lifting Chiefs to fifth on the Premier Soccer League table.

The result also meant Chiefs completed a league double over their opponents, having won the reverse fixture by the same scoreline thanks to a goal from Flavio Da Silva.

Khanye, speaking on iDiski TV, argued that as a product of the club’s youth academy, Shabalala must take more responsibility and influence matches.

“There were plenty of wrong decisions, and I’m talking about Mdu,” Khanye stated. “If you can’t perform now, this is the right time to raise your hand, boy.”

The analyst warned that Shabalala’s place in the team could be at risk if he fails to capitalise on his current opportunities.

“Once the club brings in quality players, you’re not going to get regular game time,” he continued.

“How many chances does this boy need? He graduated from the development system. He ate, slept, and woke up football. There are no excuses for him.”

“Coming from the academy, his decision-making and his ability to take on opponents should be better than his teammates.”
