Mamelodi Sundowns next match: Fixtures & results for 2026-27

Mamelodi Sundowns will have little time to feel sorry about themselves following their elimination from the CAF Champions League as they have a cup tie on Tuesday, October 27.

Sundowns suffered an 11-year low as they were knocked out of the Champions League at the preliminary round on Friday, October 23.

Miguel Cardoso’s team could only play out a 1-1 draw against Wiliete SC in the second leg at home and with the first leg having ended goalless in Angola, they crashed out on the away goals rule.

Rare early Champions League elimination

It is the first time that Sundowns have gone out so early since 2015 given they have only been eliminated at the group stage once since winning their maiden Champions League title in 2016.

The Brazilians are the defending champions and were many people’s favourites to win it again this season but will be watching on TV as the rest, including Orlando Pirates, fight it out for Africa’s premier club football title this time around.

For Sundowns, the games come thick and fast as on Tuesday (19:00), they have a Carling Knockout Round of 16 tie at home to Marumo Gallants.

The Brazilians cannot afford to dwell too much on their Champions League disappointment as another poor outing will knock them out of a second cup competition in a matter of days.

Sundowns’ poor Carling Cup record

Sundowns have not fared well in the Carling Knockout as they were shock losers to Magesi FC in the 2024 final while last year, they suffered a surprise post-match defeat to Gallants in the Round of 16 after a goalless draw in regulation time.

Gallants went all the way to the final before losing 1-0 to Orlando Pirates, and will be looking to strike again this year, making it an interesting game on the grand scheme of things.

Sundowns have already won two trophies this term; the African-Asian-Pacific Cup and MTN8, but after exiting the competition they crave on Friday, they can ill afford more shocks.
