It left Pirates with the job of catching up and the Buccaneers must now beat Richards Bay by at least 2-0 on Wednesday to go back to the top.
Sundowns have returned to their brilliant best and now boast seven straight wins in the league which have lifted them back to where they belong and that run includes a 2-1 victory over Pirates.
It is just what they need as the season enters its homestretch and matches continue to pile up which will test whether Pirates have what it takes to deny them a ninth successive PSL crown.
