Mamelodi Sundowns brought another twist to this intriguing title race when they dropped two points from a winning position against Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday, April 22.

Sundowns took the lead inside 27 minutes when Tsiki Ntsabeleng slotted home from Arthur Sales’ pass after a neat exchange of play and they looked to be cruising to three more points and a place on the top of the table until a late twist.

Miguel Cardoso’s team, who had been frustrated for most of the encounter, gave away a late penalty following a foul in the box, allowing Tshegofatso Mabasa, on loan at Stellies from Orlando Pirates, to score from the spot and aid his parent club’s title quest.

The shared spoils saw Sundowns miss a chance to move to the summit and they are now on 57 points, one behind leaders Pirates but they have played a game less than the Buccaneers.

It means Sundowns will have to win their game in hand to regain top spot next week. For now though, it is Pirates with the advantage but Sundowns will be hoping for some favours from Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby on Sunday, April 26.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS’ NEXT MATCH & DATES

Sundowns will turn their focus to their match against Richards Bay at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Sunday, April 26 and they could be doing it already four points behind, assuming Pirates beat Chiefs in the derby.

That leaves Sundowns under pressure as they have few margins for error but Richards Bay will not be easy pickings, given they nearly beat Pirates just over a week ago, before a couple of mistakes saw them share the spoils in an entertaining clash that ended 2-2 on April 10.

The Natal Rich Boyz are on a good run, having won two and drawn one of their last three games, while they still habour top eight ambitions.
