Kaizer Chiefs transfer blow? PSL club sets sights on Velebayi and Baartman

Kaizer Chiefs could be about to face a bidding war for Cape Town Spurs duo Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman who have been strongly linked to the club.

The two players are believed to have reached a deal with Chiefs following Spurs’ relegation from the National First Division to the third tier, which made them available on the cheap.

However, a ruling is yet to be made whether Chiefs, or any other club, can sign the two players on the cheap as only the PSL and NFD are recognised as professional leagues in South Africa and this is what has put everything on hold.

A ruling will determine whether interested clubs can pay a development fee in the region of R1.5 million for each player and sign them and while this is being awaited, there is now interest in the two players from another club which could disrupt Chiefs’ plans.

Who else is interested in the Cape Town Spurs stars?

“We have been alerted to such interest amongst many others. However, due to the ongoing cases, we cannot make any further comments,” Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou told Soccer Laduma.

The outlet reports that the interested club is weighing the possibility of either going for both players or one of them and are also waiting for the conclusion of the legal process to strike.

“There are a few more players who could leave before the close of the transfer window period, and then they can attempt to sign the two players from Cape Town Spurs. But it's believed that the interest is there and they have enquired about them,” a source told Soccer Laduma over the said club’s transfer plans.

Both Velebayi and Baartman have been on Chiefs’ radar since last year and Amakhosi were in protracted negotiations with Spurs for the former but failed to reach a deal and with the relegation, the Glamour Boys are now in a stronger position.
