Kaizer Chiefs Transfer News: Amakhosi to sign Velebayi FOR FREE?!

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs are set to sign several quality players in the next transfer window to boost their squad for the 2025/26 Premier Soccer League campaign.

The Glamour Boys are expected to strengthen almost all the departments after their struggles in the South African top-tier. Prior to the 2024/25 campaign, the Soweto giants battled to sign Asanele Velebayi from relegated Cape Town Spurs.

Despite offering R4 million for the winger, the Urban Warriors refused to let their prized asset leave Cape Town. However, Spurs have now lost all their players, including Velebayi, following their relegation from the second tier.

They were supposed to beat Durban City last weekend to keep alive their hope of playing in the First Division for another season, but ended up losing by a solitary goal.

Spurs’ loss, Chiefs’ gain?

The PSL and the National First Division are the only two tiers classified as professional in Mzansi. The rules dictate that players contracted to non-professional teams are at liberty to leave when they get a suitable deal.

“No, his contract is of a professional nature, and as far as I understand the procedures, Asanele and his teammates are effectively free agents and can get their clearances tomorrow if need be,” SABC Sport reported.

“They are now set to lose him on a free, but can claim development compensation, although that could be a long, drawn-out process.”

Coach Nasreddine Nabi has been relying on the likes of Pule Mmodi, youngster Mfundo Vilakazi, Wandile Duba, and Glody Lilepo in wide areas. He occasionally used Gaston Sirino, Ashley du Preez, and Mduduzi Shabalala in wide areas. Velebayi might be a plus to the team ahead of a busy 2025/26 campaign.
