Kaizer Chiefs vs Al Masry: Preview, Quotes, Head-to-Head, Key Players and Where to Watch

Kaizer Chiefs will be aiming to move closer to the knockout phase when they host Al Masry in their penultimate CAF Confederation Cup Group D clash at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm CAT.

Where to Watch

The match will be broadcast live on SuperSport across the continent, with live streaming available on the DStv Stream platform for subscribers.

Current Form

Amakhosi enter the encounter after seeing their seven-match unbeaten streak in all competitions snapped by a 2-1 loss to Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday.

Prior to that defeat, they had put together four consecutive victories before their FA Cup journey came to an end.

Chiefs currently occupy third position in Group D, sitting just one point behind leaders Zamalek. A win over Al Masry would place the Soweto side in a strong position heading into their final group match in Egypt, and certain scorelines could even secure their quarterfinal berth with a match to spare. A 1-0 win or any victory by a margin of two clear goals would ensure qualification due to CAF’s head-to-head tiebreaker system.

Al Masry arrive in Polokwane without a win in their last two outings across all competitions. They were held to a 1-1 draw by ZED in the Egyptian Premier League on Wednesday, following a 2-1 defeat to Zamalek in their most recent Confederation Cup fixture.

The Green Eagles remain second in Group D, a single point adrift of Zamalek, and know that victory over Chiefs will confirm their place in the knockout stage ahead of their final group match at home against ZESCO United.

Should Al Masry finish level on ten points with Chiefs, their superior head-to-head record would give them the decisive advantage, particularly with ZESCO already eliminated and Zamalek still vying for top spot.

Team News

Kaizer Chiefs head into the match with no suspensions, although they will again be without Bradley Cross, Reeve Frosler, Rushwin Dortley, Thabo Cele and Sibongiseni Mthethwa as all five continue recovering from their respective injuries.

Al Masry face their own absences, most notably Bonheur Mugisha, who serves a one-match suspension. They are also expected to be without Baher El Mohamady following his recent surgery.

What Was Said

“It’s not a good thing to get eliminated from the Nedbank because it’s a cup that we love and we wanted to do everything to go all the way, Kaze said.

“But unfortunately, we are out and we have to focus on our next games, which are the Confederation Cup and the league. I don’t want to find any excuse for the defeat, but it’s very tough. I’m so proud of the players. They did everything they could, but in our situation, it’s very tough to play every three days with the trips that we are doing.

“And sometimes, you know, the players are taking time to get into the game, although even before the game, we emphasise that we need to get straight into the game,” Kaze added.

Al Masry head coach Nabil Kouki

“The team (Zamalek) that was more focused won. The second goal came from a set piece, and there was a lack of focus in finishing the balls,” Kouki said.

“Playing against Zamalek, a great team that knows how to take advantage of opportunities, is a challenge. We must prepare for the upcoming matches. We will try to win the next two matches against Kaizer Chiefs and ZESCO United of Zambia. Our chances of qualifying are still high, and we hold on to hope.

“There is no stadium in Al Masry where we can train, and we travel long distances before the match to play in Suez. Many players were out of focus today against Zamalek.”

Head-to-Head

This meeting marks only the second time Kaizer Chiefs and Al Masry face each other. Their first encounter took place in November 2025 at the Suez Stadium in Egypt, where the Green Eagles claimed a 2-1 victory in the Group D fixture.
