“The conditions at the training camp were very good despite the extreme heat, which affected us in playing three games in the short space of six days,” the new head coach reflected.

“Nevertheless, we were competitive in these matches against high-level teams, which gave us valuable insights to learn from.”

For key midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu, Sunday’s Toyota Cup will represent something more important than a pre-season victory: the first real examination of whether the squad has absorbed Da Cruz’s methods.

“Going into the Toyota Cup, our main test will be to see how much we are attuned to the new coach’s philosophy and fine-tuning our combinations and general understanding of how we want to play,” Ndlovu said.

The 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season has seen Scottland continue to set the pace, and they head into Sunday’s Toyota Cup sitting top of the Zimbabwean league table after 23 matches played.

Their most recent league outing, a competitive 2-1 victory over Bulawayo Chiefs on July 22, underlined the competitive sharpness that head coach Norman Mapeza’s side will bring to Rustenburg.

“We’re prepared, we’re not coming from any pre-season,” Mapeza said ahead of the fixture.

“We’ve been playing our league games, we’ve been warming up, so we are ready for the game.”

That competitive edge matters significantly in a pre-season fixture, and Scottland will believe their mid-season rhythm gives them a tangible advantage over a Chiefs side still finding its feet under a new coach.
