Kaizer Chiefs host Stellenbosch on Wednesday in the Premier Soccer League game that will be played at the FNB Stadium.
While Stellies have been performing relatively well across all competitions, the Glamour Boys are struggling for consistency under coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Amakhosi are currently placed seventh on the table with 15 points while their midweek opponents are fifth with 16 points from 10 games, one less than the Soweto giants.
Form Guide and Head-to-Head Record
Kaizer Chiefs have collected just two wins from their last nine PSL games played. Their last win was on December 29 when they beat Chippa United by a solitary goal. Last weekend, they fell by the same margin against Cape Town City.
Stellies are doing quite well in South African top tier but they have not had a good run in the last five games. They have won just two matches, drawn two and lost once. Last weekend they were engaged in the Caf Confederation Cup Group B fixture where they won 2-0 against CD Lunda Sul to go second and boost their chances of advancing.
In the head-to-head record, Amakhosi have three wins in the last five meetings between the sides. Stellies have won the remaining two matches.
What They Said
“It’s obvious when you look at the squad that we feel that there is a need to strengthen the team, but we don’t want to throw our players under the bus saying that they are not good,” Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi said after the recent defeat against City.
“The club is working hard to find the best opportunities that are possible, and we hope that everything can improve our squad.”
Coach Steve Barker was happy with the clean sheet last weekend but insisted his team must now focus on Chiefs.
“Keeping a clean sheet, three points, 2-0 win, we are back right where we want to be in this competition, so obviously it makes next week Sunday another very big game for us against Stade de Malien,” he stated.
“But we need to first focus on Kaizer Chiefs in midweek, so we need to get back, recover, and prepare well for that game and then, we can start focusing on next week on Sunday.”
Team News and Starting XI
Chiefs played City without the services of Gaston Sirino who is out injured, and chances of playing on Wednesday are slim.
Just like Amakhosi, Stellies have no suspended players. Coach Barker will most likely start with the players who delivered in the continental assignment.
Chiefs Probable XI: Bvuma, Miguel, Frosler, Cross, Dortley, Maart, Mthethwa, Shabalala, Duba, Du Preez, Saile.
Stellenbosch Probable XI: Stephens, Moloisane, Toure, Mdaka, De Jong, Nduli, Barns, Adams, Butsaka, Lekoloane, Titus
