Kaizer Chiefs warned against getting overexcited – ‘It’s not a cup competition’

Amid their brilliant start to the season, Kaizer Chiefs have been warned against getting ahead of themselves as the campaign is just getting started.

Chiefs have opened the campaign with a 2-0 win over Stellenbosch FC and 1-0 victory past Polokwane City and will be hoping to administer the same dose to Richards Bay on Tuesday.

The Glamour Boys had ended last season with a poor run as they failed to win any of their last nine league games but the Nedbank Cup victory soothed the pain of their supporters who had watched their team struggle to win back-to-back matches in the entire season.

However, former Bafana Bafana defender Bongani Khumalo has warned Chiefs against feeling they have now arrived, saying there are many tests still to come and that they also showed some areas of weaknesses in the two matches they have won.

“[Chiefs' recent form] is very good, but it is important for the players to keep their feet on the ground,” Khumalo said on Extra Time as quoted by GOAL.

“It is a very long season; it is not a cup competition, so as much as there is joy and there is ease in how they have started, there is still a lot of work to be done.”

Khumalo, a three-time PSL winner with now defunct SuperSport United, highlighted key areas of concern that he picked up in Chiefs’ first two games which makes him feel Amakhosi are not there yet.

“The performance against Stellenbosch was not a great performance, but it was a wonderful result,” he added.

“[Against Polokwane City], the first half was not great, the second half was a lot better, so there are signs that something is brewing.

“It is important that they remain calm and most importantly, stick together and see it through,” he said.

Chiefs will host Richards Bay at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday looking to win a third straight match that will take them five points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns and nine more than Orlando Pirates who both play on Wednesday against Magesi and Stellenbosch FC respectively.
