Da Cruz becomes the first French coach to lead Chiefs in the PSL era, and he takes charge for the first time competitively after a pre-season that included a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Scottish side Rangers.

Chiefs have started 20 of their last PSL campaigns away from home, and they have avoided defeat in 18 of those openers, winning 12 and drawing five.

The Bushbuckridge based club, meanwhile, are making their top-flight debut after winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship, and they will lean on the experience of Rwandan international goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari, on loan from Chiefs themselves.

The Village Boys carried good pre-season form into the Mpumalanga Premier’s Cup, reaching the final before losing 3-1 to TS Galaxy.

The two clubs have never met before, so there is no history to lean on, only the contrast between a side chasing a fifth PSL title and a newcomer determined to make an instant impression on its return to the top flight.
