Pirates arrive as South Africa’s reigning domestic treble winners, having ended a 14-year wait for the Betway Premiership title last season under Abdeslam Ouaddou before also lifting the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup. Ouaddou’s side extended their unbeaten start to the new campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of Kruger United on September 1, though top scorer Gamphani Lungu was stretchered off with a leg injury during that win and is a doubt here, with Oswin Appollis expected to deputise.

La Cure Waves, by contrast, are making their continental debut after completing a first-ever Mauritius Super League and MFA Cup double, but have not played a competitive match since May 1. Head coach Jerome Thomas has been candid about the gulf in class, admitting his side are “not at the same level” as their visitors, with squad members reportedly balancing football with other jobs and preparation limited to a mini-tournament against local opposition and Mauritius’s Under-20 side.

There is no prior head-to-head between the clubs, with Pirates bringing continental pedigree from their 1995 African title and a 2013 final appearance against a side making its maiden CAF Champions League appearance.

Stay with us for team news, build-up and live updates as Ouaddou and Thomas’s sides get the qualifying tie under way in St Pierre, ahead of the return leg in Soweto on September 12.
