Patrick Maswanganyi converted from the penalty spot in the 37th minute to break the deadlock, moments after Brooklyn Poggenpoel was shown a straight red card for a foul on Tshepang Moremi, leaving Durban City a man down for the remainder of the match.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side had been probing for an opening without success, with Moremi’s effort from a corner drifting just wide shortly before the turning point arrived.

Durban City, who held Pirates to a goalless draw at this same ground back in May, will now have to salvage something from the final 45 minutes with ten men against a Pirates side already up a goal and firmly in control.
