Mamelodi Sundowns too good for Chippa United as Orlando Pirates drop to second

Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a vital 4-1 win on Friday night at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium to go to the summit of the Premier Soccer League table.

The Brazilians came into the match aware that three points were enough take them to 53 points from 22 games, and replace the Soweto giants Orlando Pirates who have been doing well this season.

For the Chilli Boys, victory could have lifted them from the 13th position and increased the gap between them and other relegation-threatened teams in the South African top-tier.

Mamelodi Sundowns takes first-half lead

In the 58th minute, Zuko Mdunyelwa cut the ball back to Tashreeq Matthews, but the latter’s shot was blocked by the defenders while Themba Zwane and Rayners’ strikes a couple of minutes later narrowly missed the target.

Matthews hardwork paid dividends with seven minutes to go as a loose ball fell to him, and he cleverly beat the goalkeeper to make it 3-1. The icing on the cake came in the stoppages as Brayan Leon scored from almost the corner flag after the custodian failed to deal with the danger.

The focus for Mamelodi Sundowns is now on Tuesday when they will make a trip to Durban City hoping to colelct maximum points to continue their chase for the ninth PSL crown in a row.
