How much will Mamelodi Sundowns earn if they win the CAF Champions League?

Published on by

South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns could receive a record $6 million prize if they win the CAF Champions League this season, Afrik Foot reports.

CAF approved a 50% increase in the winner’s prize money, raising it from $4 million to $6 million as part of efforts to strengthen club football across the continent. The decision was backed by CAF president Patrice Motsepe, who has repeatedly emphasised the need to make African competitions more financially competitive.

For Sundowns, the increase means lifting the trophy could bring a huge financial boost to the club’s operations, squad development, and infrastructure.

CAF Champions League prize money structure

Under the revised structure of the CAF Champions League, the tournament winner will receive $6 million, while the runner-up will earn $2 million.

Clubs that reach the semi-finals are guaranteed $1.2 million each, while teams eliminated at the quarter-final stage will receive $900,000. Meanwhile, clubs that finish third or fourth in the group stage will earn $700,000.

The increase represents one of the most significant financial improvements in African club football in recent years.

How much Mamelodi Sundowns could earn

Having already progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition, Mamelodi Sundowns are guaranteed at least $900,000 from this season’s campaign.

However, their earnings could increase depending on how far they advance in the tournament. If Sundowns reach the semi-finals, their prize money will rise to $1.2 million. Should they finish as runners-up, they would receive $2 million. But if they go all the way to win the title, the Pretoria-based club will take home the full $6 million prize.

What the prize money means for Sundowns

The potential $6 million payout could have a significant impact on the finances of Mamelodi Sundowns.

The amount, which translates to well over R100 million depending on exchange rates, could help the club strengthen its squad, invest further in youth development, and upgrade infrastructure.

Sundowns already have a strong history in African football after winning the CAF Champions League in 2016, and another triumph would not only add a second continental title to their trophy cabinet but also deliver one of the biggest financial rewards in African club football.

With the knockout stages approaching, Sundowns now have both continental glory and a $6 million payday firmly within reach.
