Mamelodi Sundowns Transfer News: Downs go for PSL-winning star to replace Mudau

Mamelodi Sundowns lost their dependable right-back Khuliso Mudau at the beginning of the season.

The 31-year-old suffered an Achilles rupture, which will keep him out of action for at least six months. The Brazilians had initially felt that they had cover owing to the availability of Zuko Mdunyelwa and Thapelo Morena.

However, Mdunyelwa suffered an injury in the 2-0 Premier Soccer League win over newbies Milford FC. With the club set for several domestic competitions as well as the CAF Champions League, Miguel Cardoso feels he can’t risk having thin depth in the department.

This explains why they have gone for experienced former Stellenbosch captain Deano van Rooyen, who is a free agent after parting ways with the defending PSL champions Orlando Pirates.

“Mamelodi Sundowns have stepped up their pursuit of former Orlando Pirates defender Deano van Rooyen, with talks understood to have reached an advanced stage following the latest injury concern at right back,” SABC Sport reported.

“Van Rooyen became a free agent two weeks ago after mutually terminating his contract with Pirates, and his availability has now become increasingly attractive to Sundowns as they reassess their defensive depth.

“An offer has been tabled, with negotiations now focused on the finer details of a potential deal. The interest in van Rooyen has been known, but Mdunyelwa’s latest fitness concern appears to have changed the urgency around the move. 

“Sundowns are now weighing up whether to push the button on a signing that would provide immediate experience and depth during one of the busiest stretches of their season,” they added.
