Kaizer Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley has issued a rallying call to the club’s supporters and his teammates as they head into the Soweto derby.

Chiefs will face Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday with the two sides separated by eight points on the Premier Soccer League table, the Buccaneers in second place on 22 points, while Amakhosi are fifth.

While Pirates come into the game in strong form, Chiefs just won their first match in six on Tuesday, when they thrashed TS Galaxy 3-0 in the Carling Knockout and they are looking to carry that confidence into the big game.

Dortley, who played his first game on Tuesday, returning to action since March 2025 due to injury, sees lots of positives that he feels Amakhosi can use to stun Pirates.

“It has been difficult being off the field for so long but it has been good being back,” Dortley said on Thursday while recalling his long absence.

“Being able to help the team, to represent the badge again and being back before a derby is amazing for me. I like playing derbies and one of the biggest games in football, in the world and one of the biggest in Africa.

“The mood is good after the win; we needed this win before the derby. The mood is good, we just want to go out there, implement what the coach wants us to do and to play to the best of our ability.”

The defender, who impressed on Tuesday, hopes to make coach Fernando da Cruz’s team for the derby and has urged Chiefs fans to fill the stadium and act as an extra source of motivation for the players.

“To the Amakhosi faithful, thank you for always supporting us and I want to invite you to come out on Saturday in numbers to support us,” he added.

“Fill the stadium, make the stadium full of gold, we don’t want to see any black and will do our part on the field, you will do your part in the stands and we will put it together and win this game.”

Chiefs are yet to beat Pirates in the league in the last six matches, losing five and drawing one, and will want to right those wrongs on Saturday.
