Matias Esquivel, the high-profile Mamelodi Sundowns signing, has been loaned out to Greek side FC Kifisia for the season, a move that highlights his ongoing struggle to make an impact at the club.
The Argentine midfielder joined Sundowns in a much-publicized €2.3 million (R47 million) transfer from Club Atletico Lanus in January 2024, but has not lived up to the expectations that accompanied his arrival.
This is not the first time Esquivel has been loaned out; he previously returned to his home country to play for CA Talleres. After rejoining Sundowns ahead of the 2025/26 season, another loan deal was finalized, this time to the Greek Super League.
The move suggests that Sundowns are keen for Esquivel to get regular playing time and continue his development away from the pressure cooker of their demanding squad.
The loan to FC Kifisia presents a significant opportunity for the 25-year-old to find his rhythm and prove his worth, potentially paving the way for a more successful return to Sundowns in the future.

GREEK OUTFIT UNVEILS ESQUIVEL
“FC Kifisia announce the start of cooperation with Matias Eduardo Esquivel, who plays as a midfielder,” the club stated, as translated from Greek.
“Matias Esquivel signed a one-year contract. PAE Kifisia welcomes him to its family and wishes him health, luck and every success.”
Meanwhile, speaking about the player’s exit, Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso said, “I had nothing to do with him coming to the club, that was under the previous coach – Rulani Mokwena.”
“But Matias is a very good player, and he will succeed Wherever he goes. I also didn't give him many opportunities, but at some point, Matias didn't show any perseverance or real willingness to get into the team.”
