Latest news on Mamelodi Sundowns, including the star’s resolve to remain in Europe, Miguel Cardoso explains the advantage of playing Polokwane back-to-back & more.

Unfortunate we are playing Downs after three days!

Polokwane City coach Phuti Mohafe has admitted the timing is far from ideal as his side prepares to face Mamelodi Sundowns again in a second successive league clash

“It doesn’t matter either way because you have to play any team at any given moment,” said Mohafe.

“So it is so unfortunate that we are playing them in a period of three days.

“So it gives us a lesser time to prepare thoroughly but we have to go and play against them.

“So it is one of the teams and it is one of the situations that forces us to play them within the space of three days.”

Sundowns’ advantage of playing Polokwane City back-to-back

Miguel Cardoso has highlighted a potential advantage for Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of their second successive league clash against Polokwane City.

“I don’t know if it’s an advantage or not. We had to play every opponent home and away,” said Cardoso.

“The only advantage that other teams have towards ourselves is that has not happened this time is that teams don’t play in between the weeks.

“So this Polokwane team played four days ago as we, or three days ago as we and you understand the level, the impact that it brings also on the opponent. So that’s the only thing that we can profit, but it’s both sides.

“Both teams will be exposed to a third match in a seven-day, which is obviously a big aggression.

“So we don’t expect a lot of intensity, but we need to go to the limit as we can. Let’s recover the players as much as possible now.”

Sundowns star keen on staying abroad

Thapelo Maseko is enjoying life in Europe and it hardly comes as a surprise that he has aspirations of staying abroad, but Mamelodi Sundowns hold the key.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, his agent Glyn Binkin confirmed that Sundowns are aware of Maseko’s aspirations, but he still has a two-year contract left with the Tshwane giants and a decision will be made on what happens next in his career in the coming weeks. A lot will depend on Sundowns, but there’s no ruling out the possibility of staying in Europe.

“It has always been Thapelo’s dream to play in Europe, and right now he is really enjoying it. Sundowns are aware of Thapelo’s aspirations, but he has two years remaining on his contract with the club. So once the season has ended, I’m sure we will engage with them further regarding the way forward for him and his career,” Binkin said to Soccer Laduma.

“He is grateful to Sundowns for giving him the opportunity to go abroad on loan, and whilst he was hardly utilised at Sundowns, he is a regular in Europe now and making a name for himself.”
