Modiba makes PSL admission

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba admits the Brazilians would have preferred to begin their Betway Premiership title defence alongside the rest of the league.

Sundowns were scheduled to open their league campaign against Marumo Gallants last weekend.

However, the fixture was postponed following exceptional circumstances affecting the club, meaning Miguel Cardoso’s side will now begin their competitive season in the MTN8 against Polokwane City.

“Yeah, I think mentally we prepared to play on the first, all of us,” Modiba as per Soccer Laduma.

“I think everyone would have loved to play because we don’t want to, you know, fall behind because teams are collecting points and for us, we don’t want to play catch-up games.

“But, you know, there’s nothing we could do because of the situation. Yeah, we had to accept that. As we turn focus on the MTN8, for our game against Polokwane City, they’ve already played. So, I think also it gives us something to watch how they play this season because they’ve got a new coach.

“They’ve brought in new players as well. So, yeah, that game will help us to analyse them, know their strengths and weaknesses going into that game,” he concluded.

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba says the team is determined to reclaim the Betway Premiership title after missing out on a record-extending ninth consecutive league crown last season.

Modiba said that while winning the CAF Champions League – the biggest prize in African club football – was a major achievement, losing the league title was difficult to accept because many of the players are not accustomed to that feeling.

He added that the team will do everything possible to earn the gold badge again, saying they cannot wait to begin their league campaign – a marathon they know very well how to navigate.

“We want to win the league again. The feeling was not nice losing the league cause some of us have never experienced that,” he told the media.

“We want to go back of winning the league every season because you win it, you go back to the Champions League. “And we always want to do well in the Champions League, get our gold badge back.

“But congratulations to Pirates, they deserve it and we go again this season, another marathon that we know very well how to run, let the games begin,” Modiba concluded.
