Cardoso unhappy with ‘disruptive’ venue change

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso says their trip to face Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday has disrupted their preparations for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup clash against Al Ahli.

The Brazilians were initially scheduled to face the Chilli Boys at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, but the venue failed to meet PSL criteria, forcing an immediate change on Monday.

The switch means Sundowns now face additional travel and logistical demands ahead of the Al Ahli clash in Tshwane, with Cardoso admitting the late change has thrown their plans into disarray.

“I’ve already spoken a lot about South African pitches and it’s always tricky for me because I’m highly criticised when I speak about things that will take the level of the South African game to another dimension,” he said, as quoted by SABC Sport.

“We had a trip planned, but the change of plans disrupts our preparations and plans for the Intercontinental Cup completely. We can no longer return home on the same day of the match, and we cannot travel in the morning of the day after the game either. All we can do is enjoy one another’s company at the hotel and maybe walk on the beach.”

Cardoso adamant he has proven his worth

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes he has done enough to prove to South Africans that he is capable of achieving even more with the club.

The Portuguese coach arrived at Masandawana towards the end of 2024, replacing Manqoba Mngqithi. Since taking charge, Cardoso has enjoyed considerable success, guiding Sundowns to the Betway Premiership title and the CAF Champions League trophy. 

Before eventually lifting the continental title, he led the club to the Champions League final, where they suffered defeat to Pyramids.

While acknowledging that things are not always perfect, Cardoso believes his achievements have demonstrated that there is still more he can accomplish with Sundowns.

“And I think I already proved to South Africa that we can do beautiful things together. It’s just a matter of letting things flow,” said Cardoso.

“Obviously the direction is not always straight. It’s like this [rollercoaster], but we know the sense that we want to go. It’s that way, not this way. But sometimes, we go that way. And love will always unite us, no matter what the critics can try to tell us about,” he concluded.
