Fadlu: Every Raja player wanted to join Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have grown into such a dominant force across the African continent that players from top clubs actively seek a move to Chloorkop, according to former Raja Casablanca coach Fadlu Davids.

The former Orlando Pirates coach made the revelations in the aftermath of Sundowns’ FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup triumph, where they defeated Al Ahli Saudi at Loftus Versfeld, and credited club owner Dr Patrice Motsepe’s long-term vision for the transformation.

“It’s very important for a leader with vision and [who knows] where he wants to take the club, not everybody understood what he meant when he said [he wants Sundowns to dominate in Africa],” Davids said on Radio 2000 as per iDiski Times.

Davids revealed that even during his time in Morocco, players would approach him hoping he could broker a move to the South African giants: “I think any player at Raja [Casablanca] would always come to me and say please get me into Sundowns.”

“Everybody wants to play for Sundowns. Everybody fears Sundowns. That is just the visibility in CAF Champions League, always being in semi-finals, finals,” he added.

How Wandile Dube stacks up against Mbokazi

Mamelodi Sundowns’ deadline-day signing Wandile Dube is drawing comparisons to Bafana Bafana starlet Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

Dube arrived at Chloorkop after an outstanding campaign with AmaZulu and a member of the club’s scouting network feels he is on the same level as the ex-Orlando Pirates defender when he broke through.

“I don’t like comparing players, everybody has got his own path,” the source told KickOff. “There was no Mbokazi before Mbokazi, so he is also on his journey. This thing of comparing people is a problem for me.”

“At the time Mbokazi was starting, you can say they are around the same level, obviously with Sundowns there are other good players. Mbokazi came at the right time (at Pirates) where there was not that much competition in terms of centre-back as a left-footed player.

“And obviously you get game-time, you do well. With this one also (Dube) the future is bright. It’s just not going to be as easy as Mbokazi when he arrived, because at Sundowns there is a lot of quality and a team competing in FIFA competitions is not the same (as Pirates), which was just coming back to continental competitions.”
