Cardoso on Sundowns’ ‘escape’

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes going out of the country was the escape they needed during this difficult period for the club.

Sundowns had to deal with the painful death of midfielder Jayden Adams last month, as a time when they had just started their pre-season preparations. They had to postpone their departure date to Austria to pay their last respects to the fallen hero who was at the FIFA World Cup with Bafana Bafana in June.

Being away, Cardoso has admitted, was good for the team. It gave the team time to mourn the death of Adams while preparing for the new season in a different environment.

“I think it was an important turnover in terms of emotions. We had to interrupt the pre-season. We went to the memorial (of Jayden Adams). We were not in the best place emotionally, so coming out of the country and escaping a little bit from the context was very important. Indeed, that’s the first positive aspect we need to highlight to keep the team together,” Cardoso told Downs’ media team.

“As much as we still had to deal with the funeral, it was very important that we could go through this emotional collective moment together. That is a positive thing because I think we ended the camp in the right spot.

“In terms of sports side, the preparation is a good opportunity that the club provides the team to come abroad, where we can find opponents in a level that is difficult (than) in South Africa because we don’t play preparation games against our strongest rivals. That is the important question regarding the future of this team and the competitions we have this year, and also focusing on the (Club) World Cup in 2029 where we have to accumulate throughout the years we have until then.

“Experience some international level for the youngsters also to profit from it and grow, and also for the team to grow on the level of challenges we are going to face throughout the season. Mission accomplished, some tough opponents on the way and positive outcomes from it,” he concluded.

Ex-Sundowns Mokwena on Pyramids targets

Pyramids FC coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed where the club need to strengthen in the transfer market ahead of the new season.

The Egyptian outfit recently lost the services of striker Fiston Mayele, who has been a key contributor to the club’s success over the last couple years.

“Pyramids’ deals? Fortunately, the club is in agreement with us, and we are on the same page,” Mokwena said, as per Yallakora.

“Our transfer targets are very clear. It is true that the striker, Fiston Mayele, has left, but we have a strong team. We need to improve in certain positions, especially in the forward line with the striker position, but the club is in agreement with us, we think the same way, and we are discussing a fair number of strikers,” he added.

“We are trying to look at what suits us, because it is important to know how we want to play, how we want to develop the team, while being aware of the type of players who succeed in the Egyptian League, the African Champions League, and who succeed in Pyramids.

“We also have a very good recruitment manager, and the management is working around the clock to try and get us the best options to strengthen and improve the squad,” the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach concluded.
