Sundowns’ signing sacrificing international career?

Mamelodi Sundowns’ incoming signing Jhegson Méndez will complete his move with worries rising about his international future.

Méndez is due to arrive at Sundowns on a free transfer in January from Ecuador champions Independiente de Valle. The 29-year-old will play his last match for Independiente on December 13.

He has already agreed what is essentially a two-and-a-half-year deal with an option of a third year. That deal is subject to him passing his medical upon arrival in South Africa.

Based on information gathered by this website, his contract will move him straight into the top 10 earners in the PSL. This places his cost to company package upwards of R8 million per annum. Sundowns will then announce his signing once he has done his medical.

The plus for the Ecuadorian is that he has a fair understanding of English having spent four years playing in Florida and Los Angeles, where English is spoken alongside Spanish. However, while his contract is just as good as done, there are concerns about his international career.

The big question is whether he will still be called up for the national team while playing in South Africa?

South Americans have traditionally attach little value to the PSL. Marcelo Allende is a prime example of that with Chile – who are 50th on the FIFA rankings.

While he has been a consistent performer for the Tshwane giants, Chilean selectors have ignored him just because he plays in the PSL. Ecuador are up in 24th on the FIFA rankings and so are by far a better football-playing nation.

Downs to win every domestic cup?

Junior Khanye believes Orlando Pirates taking the 2025/26 title away from Mamelodi Sundowns could have been a blessing in disguise for the Brazilians.

Now, after winning the MTN8, he’s backing Sundowns to go all the way in the league, Nedbank Cup and Carling Knockout!
