That result moved Sundowns three points clear of Pirates, who did not play in the league that weekend due to their CAF Champions League commitments, and it gave Cardoso further evidence that his squad possesses the character required to grind out results even when the football is not at its fluent best.

The Portuguese coach has also been making history at Loftus Versfeld, where he has now gone 27 successive league matches without defeat, a new record in the Premier Soccer League, eclipsing Stuart Baxter’s previous mark of 26 unbeaten home games set with Kaizer Chiefs.

That fortress-like home record is the ideal platform from which to extend their advantage at the top, and Wednesday’s opponents offer precisely the kind of opposition that has allowed Sundowns to operate at full throttle throughout the campaign.

Siwelele are a club in disarray, and it would be difficult to overstate the scale of their problems heading into this fixture.

The Bloemfontein side arrived in the Betway Premiership this season having released 23 players in one of the biggest squad overhauls in recent memory, and the early evidence suggests that the transition has not gone smoothly.

Two draws and three defeats from five league matches is a return that leaves them rooted in 14th place with just two points, and the 3-2 defeat at Kaizer Chiefs on September 6, despite a valiant fightback, proved to be the final straw for the board.

His 4-3-3 possession system has become the cornerstone of everything Sundowns do, and his disciplined game management is evident in the way his team close out tight matches, as illustrated perfectly by Mokoena’s late winner at Golden Arrows.

Cardoso is not given to emotional management, preferring analytical problem-solving, and his measured post-match assessment that “character is so important to winning long term” gives a clear indication of the culture he is building at the club.
