Downs must win: a 0-0 goes to penalties and any score draw sends Wiliete through on away goals.

Mamelodi Sundowns must beat Wiliete SC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday, October 23, to reach the CAF Champions League group stage after a 0-0 first leg in Angola.

The tie rules favour the visitors, because a goalless draw goes to penalties and any score draw sends Wiliete through on away goals.

Our Mamelodi Sundowns vs Wiliete SC prediction is a home win, built on a deeper attack and a Wiliete side that carved out only a handful of chances in Lubango.

Downs are without long-term right-back Khuliso Mudau and sweating on Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams, yet their only defeat this season came in August.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Wiliete SC preview: Downs need goals, not caution

Downs failed to score for only the second time in 11 matches in Lubango, a rare lapse for a side that put four past Richards Bay on October 13.

They beat Orlando Pirates 2-0 in the MTN8 final on October 10 and lead the Premiership on 23 points from nine games.

Their only defeat this season came in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final against Golden Arrows on August 23.

Across their last five matches in all competitions, Downs have won three and drawn two, scoring nine and conceding three.

Miguel Cardoso said after the first leg that his team needed more control and more aggression in the box.

He has since framed the return as another final, saying his side have been playing “final after final” since the season began.

Wiliete, from the coastal city of Benguela, finished second in the Girabola in each of the last two seasons and lead it again, unbeaten with five wins and a draw from six games.

Over their last five matches in all competitions Wiliete have won three and drawn two, scoring nine and conceding one, with four clean sheets.

The caveat is the opposition, because those numbers came against Girabola sides and Foresters of Seychelles, beaten 5-0 on aggregate in the first preliminary round.

Wiliete debuted in this competition last season and lost 5-0 on aggregate to Young Africans in the first round, so Downs are a far bigger test.

After the Foresters tie, coach Beto Bianchi said: “If we want to get into the group stage, we have to eliminate Sundowns.”

Continental Watch: Sundowns v Wiliete SC
First leg: Wiliete SC 0-0 Mamelodi Sundowns (October 18). Aggregate entering this leg: 0-0. A goalless draw after 90 minutes goes to penalties, while any score draw sends Wiliete through on away goals. The 16 second-round winners reach a group stage that opens on November 27-29.

Sundowns vs Wiliete SC head-to-head: one meeting, one draw

The clubs had never met before October 18, when they drew 0-0 at the Estadio Nacional da Tundavala in Lubango after a 30-minute delay for lightning.

Wiliete’s home ground in Benguela did not meet CAF standards, which is why the first leg was played in Lubango, about 355km away.

Brayan Leon had a shot cleared off the line inside five minutes, and Tashreeq Matthews and Mokoena both forced Elber Binha into saves before half time.

Mokoena left on a stretcher in the 40th minute and was replaced by Bathusi Aubaas.

Teboho Mokoena sustained a nasty injury following a horrific tackle.

After the break Binha saved from Matthews in the 66th minute, and Mabululu forced a diving stop from Ricardo Goss with a header.

Gilberto also beat Khulumani Ndamane and made Goss come off his line.

Iqraam Rayners, a substitute, drifted a shot wide from the edge of the box in the 89th minute.

A single meeting settles nothing, but the 0-0 leaves Wiliete needing only a score draw to go through.

Sundowns vs Wiliete SC team news and predicted XI

Mudau is out for at least six months with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Mokoena, the Bafana Bafana midfielder, aggravated a ligament problem picked up on national duty, and he looks more likely to miss out than play.

His scan result had not been published at the time of writing, so he is listed as a doubt rather than ruled out.

Williams, the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, was left out of the first-leg squad after a knock in training, and Cardoso expects him to recover quickly.

Aubrey Modiba also missed the first leg and is a doubt, with the team doctor describing the injury as not serious.

If Mokoena is out, Cardoso must choose between Aubaas and Thabo Cele to play alongside Marcelo Allende.

No injuries or suspensions have been reported for Wiliete, though information from the Angolan camp is limited.

Rayners vs Mabululu: the strikers who could decide Sundowns vs Wiliete SC

Rayners is joint-top scorer for Downs this season on three goals, two of them in the 4-1 win at Richards Bay, yet Cardoso left him on the bench in Lubango.

Mabululu, the 34-year-old Angola captain who joined Wiliete on a free transfer on July 19, scored three of the club’s five goals against Foresters.

Miguel Cardoso vs Beto Bianchi: the managers

Cardoso, the 54-year-old Portuguese and former Esperance coach, took over at Sundowns in December 2024.

He won the 2025/26 CAF Champions League, beating AS FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate in the final decided on May 24.

Bianchi, a Brazilian, joined Wiliete in July 2026 after a spell at Kabuscorp.

The first leg ended with a physical altercation in the stadium tunnel between Bianchi and Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela.

Wiliete vice-president Vitorino Vissele said Bianchi suffered injuries, including a blow to a sensitive area, and spent about 30 minutes in an ambulance at the stadium.

Komphela has said the incident was triggered by alleged racist remarks, insults in Portuguese and being spat on.

Wiliete intend to complain to CAF, whose action depends on the match commissioner’s report, and no ruling had been announced at the time of writing.

Sundowns vs Wiliete SC tactical preview

Downs lined up in a 4-2-3-1 in Lubango and kept the ball, with Allende, Nuno Santos and Matthews trying to find Leon in behind.

Goss said afterwards that Wiliete let Sundowns build up and sat back rather than pressing high, so expect another compact block in Pretoria.

Teboho Mokoena came off worse after a tackle.
Teboho Mokoena came off worse after a tackle.

Mokoena’s absence would remove the player who forced Binha into a save from distance, which matters against a team that defends deep.

Wiliete’s route is direct running from the wings, and Gilberto beat Ndamane in the second half to drag Goss off his line.

One Wiliete goal would force Downs to score twice, so an early home goal matters more than usual.

If the first hour stays level, Cardoso can turn to Rayners, Arthur Sales and Themba Zwane from the bench.

Sundowns vs Wiliete SC tips and prediction

We expect Downs to win without conceding, because Wiliete’s defensive record was built against domestic and preliminary-round opposition rather than a champion.

Wiliete‘s clean sheets came against Foresters, FC Luanda, Recreativo do Libolo and a Sundowns side that still created the better chances.

The counter-argument is real, as Downs have a doubtful goalkeeper and an uncertain midfield, and they failed to score in Lubango.

Even so, they created the better chances in Lubango without Williams and Modiba, and with Mokoena gone before the break.
