Massive Nabi blow for Chiefs ahead of Stellenbosch’s PSL date

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi is set to miss his team's Premier Soccer League game against Stellenbosch on Sunday.

The Amakhosi faithful were keen on having the best possible start to the South African top-flight football after labouring to a ninth-place finish in the 2024/25 edition. Already, the team is without their pacy winger Pule Mmodi for the game that will be staged at the Athlone Stadium.

Mmodi was red-carded in the Glamour Boys' last game of last edition against Sekhukhune United, and is still serving the suspension. It means the Soweto giants will have to rely on the likes of Glody Lilepo, Wandile Duba, and Mfundo Vilakazi.

Chiefs suffer Nabi blow

The defending Nedbank Cup Champions have now confirmed their tactician will not be part of the Glamour Boys squad for this weekend's duty.

“We regret to inform our supporters that Coach Nasreddine Nabi will not be traveling with the team to Cape Town for our opening game of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season against Stellenbosch FC this Sunday,” read a statement from the club's media team.

“A critical accident involving his wife has occurred at his home in Tunisia, prompting the coach to travel this evening to be with her and the family.  Coach Nabi will return to South Africa once the situation has stabilised.

“The coach has had discussions with the technical team to prepare for the game. In Coach Nabi’s absence, first assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef and second assistant coach Cedric Kaze will be on bench for the upcoming game. Kaizer Chiefs would like to extend its best wishes to Coach Nabi and his family during this challenging time. We ask all supporters to keep them in your thoughts and prayers,” Amakhosi concluded.
