Mbokazi leaving MLS? Agent confirms interest from Serie A giants

Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi could be headed to Europe just six months after leaving Orlando Pirates for MLS club Chicago Fire.

This is following reports that Italian giants Napoli have shown “strong interest” in signing him, according to his agent.

The highly-rated centre-back, who turns 21 in September, caught the eye with his performances for South Africa at the 2026 World Cup. He has already earned 14 senior caps for his country.

Mbokazi joined MLS side Chicago Fire from Pirates in January this year for a fee of €2.5 million, but a move to Serie A could already be on the horizon.

Mokazi’s agent confirms transfer talks

Speaking to Stile TV, agent Basia Michaels confirmed Napoli’s pursuit and indicated that the MLS club is open to a sale.

“There is strong interest from Napoli, and the Chicago Fire are also paying close attention to this situation,” Michaels stated as quoted by Football Italia.

“I have not had direct contact with the Napoli director of sport. However, the Chicago Fire want to sell the player and are working hard on this front.”

Michaels suggested that a deal could be struck if the clubs agree on terms. “If the two clubs can reach an agreement, then playing for Napoli is certainly feasible,” she added. “I am also aware that there are rumours on Belgian, German and Italian clubs, but so far nothing concrete and no contact with the Chicago Fire.”

Premier League interest in Bafana star?

When asked about potential interest from the Premier League following Mbokazi’s strong World Cup campaign, the agent downplayed the speculation.

“I heard about Brentford and Nottingham Forest, but we are waiting for some concrete interest, not just calls to ask for information,” she replied.

Napoli’s interest in a new defender comes after they were reportedly outbid by Milan for Lazio’s Mario Gila, who moved for a reported €25 million plus add-ons. Mbokazi is currently under contract with the Chicago Fire until December 2029, with the club holding an option to extend for an additional year.
