McCarthy still reveling in historic Chiefs goal as he fires warning to Gallants

Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy is still in awe of his history-making goal against Golden Arrows last week.

McCarthy scored a controversial goal, which was contested with calls of offside, as Chiefs won 1-0 last Tuesday against Abafana Bes’thende in a PSL match.

That was historic as the young defender emulated his father Fabian McCarthy, whose first goal for Chiefs was also against Arrows, coming at Kings Park in Durban on 14 September 2005.

“Scoring my first goal for the club in a league game was definitely one to remember,” McCarthy said on Sunday.

“I found out that my father and I made history scoring against the same team, you know, as our first goals for Kaizer Chiefs. It’s definitely one for the history books and I’m looking forward to scoring many more.”

McCarthy is also hoping that Chiefs’ 1-0 win over ZESCO United of Zambia in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday will get their campaign back on track and see them make it out of their group.

With Al Masry and Zamalek playing out a goalless draw on Sunday, Chiefs, who have four points remain third on the log, two points off Zamalek and three behind Al Masry.

“In terms of the group table and our points with other teams our chances are much bigger in terms of qualifying to the next round,” he added. “The belief is there and it is yet to be done in the remaining games.”

Chiefs next play away to Marumo Gallants in the PSL on Tuesday night and McCarthy expects a difficult game given the short turnaround between the game and Sunday’s contest.

“Going to Bloemfontein playing against Marumo Gallants, they have quality players and a team that brings anything on the day so it’s quite unexpected,” said the defender.

“We can only plan so much but with what we have here as a team we are just going to go there guns blazing and do the job.”
