Kaizer Chiefs defender Miguel Inacio made a piece of history when he scored their first goal in their 3-1 win over Stellenbosch in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final on Saturday.
Inacio scored the opening goal when he stepped up to score from the penalty spot, netting his fourth goal of the season for the Glamour Boys.
The Angolan defender has settled in well at Chiefs since joining in the off-season from Petro Atletico and is one of coach Nasreddine Nabi’s key men.
Which record did Inacio equal?
From his four goals, three have come in the Nedbank Cup, the first in the 4-0 victory over Free Agents in the Round of 32 before scoring penalties against Chippa United in the Last 16, when Chiefs won 3-0, and on Saturday against Steve Barker’s team.
With that, Inacio is the first Chiefs player to score in the opening three rounds of the Nedbank Cup since Marks Maponyane in 1989, a 36-year wait that will motivate the defender even further.
The 29-year-old has been ever-present for Chiefs since he signed, playing in 22 games across all competitions, although his performances have not been without some problems.
Chiefs landed tough semis draw
Inacio’s positioning, lack of pace and tackling have been suspect on occasions, especially when Chiefs play with a high defensive line as he is always caught out against teams that are quick on the counter-attack.
The defender will hope to make further history in the Nedbank Cup after Chiefs were paired with either Mamelodi Sundowns or Sekhukhune United in the semi-final draw conducted on Sunday evening.
The Nedbank Cup represents the only chance Chiefs have to win silverware this season and to end their 10-year trophy drought, they have two more hurdles to overcome before they lay their hands on the crown.
