Nedbank Cup: Kaizer Chiefs & Orlando Pirates land tricky semi-final draws

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs have a tricky Nedbank Cup semi-final fixture after getting paired with either Mamelodi Sundowns or Sekhukhune United.

Chiefs sealed their place in the last four following a controversial 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday and now have a tough match if they want to make it to the final as either Sundowns or Sekhukhune stand in their way.

Meanwhile, holders Orlando Pirates, who are looking for a third straight Nedbank Cup win, have landed Marumo Gallants in the semi-final.

Tantalising semi-final fixtures

Of the two Soweto giants, Pirates will feel a little relieved as they have been handed what appears to be a kind draw, on paper against Gallants, who are struggling in the PSL.

Chiefs will be hoping that it is Sekhukhune and not Sundowns, who have already beaten them three times this season.

Sundowns and Sekhukhune are yet to play their quarter-final match after it was postponed on Friday following reports that another game has been booked at the match venue, the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Miguel Cardoso’s side are considered favourites to win and if they live up to the billing, a clash with Chiefs for the fourth time this season will be waiting.

Meanwhile, Pirates, who beat SuperSport United on post-match penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time, will hope to get over Gallants and seal a third straight final ticket.

There is a possibility of another Sundowns-Pirates final just like last season, if both teams overcome their rivals, with the Buccaneers having won 2-1 last June to lift a second straight Nedbank Cup trophy.

There could also be a Soweto derby final if Pirates and Chiefs go all the way after avoiding each other in the semi-final.
