Mo Salah? Hugo Broos outlines Bafana’s plan against Egypt’s dangerman

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has cautioned his team against only focusing on Egypt captain Mohamed Salah when the two teams clash in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations match on Friday.

South Africa take on the Pharaohs in their second group stage match with the winner of the clash set to seal a ticket to the knockout rounds at AFCON 2025.

Ahead of the match, talk has been about the players to watch and they do not come better than Liverpool legend Salah who is one of the biggest stars gracing the tournament.

What has Broos said about Salah?

Salah has already made his mark after scoring the winner in their 2-1 opening day victory over Zimbabwe but Broos says it would be a mistake to only focus on Salah when the Egyptian team is loaded with other match winners.

“We’re not focused on one player, we’re focused on the team, it would be a big mistake to focus on one individual of the Egyptian team, we all know how good Salah is, we all know how good [Omar] Marmoush is – we all know how good Trezeguet is, it’s such a good team,” Broos said on Thursday.

“If we focus on one player? We’re not prepared to beat a team and not say ‘oh Salah or Marmoush didn’t play good in the game’, for us it’s just to focus on beating the team [Egypt].”

What else makes Egypt dangerous?

Salah had a rather subdued performance against Zimbabwe despite his late goal as he found chances few and far between after the Warriors contained him.

However, Manchester City forward Marmoush was a menace, testing Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi a number of times before he finally found the target with the Pharaohs’ opening goal in the second half.

Egypt had 35 goal attempts against Zimbabwe, 11 on target, and South Africa have their work cut out as Salah and Marmoush are not the only dangermen.
