Rele Mofokeng: Pirates forward finally settles debate over his best position

Orlando Pirates forward Relebohile Mofokeng has finally explained where he likes to play amid mixed views over his best position.

Mofokeng has excelled both as a winger and as a number 10 but this season, both Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and Bafana Bafana boss Hugo Broos have made it clear that he is at his best in a central role behind the main striker.

The 21-year-old himself has been diplomatic in past interviews over where he likes to play but he has finally revealed his preferred position.

“I think the style we play here at Pirates, a 10 is suitable for me,” Mofokeng said on SuperSport TV after leading Pirates to a 5-0 win over Golden Arrows on Tuesday night.

“I’m not really someone who likes running. I’m someone who prefers tiny spaces. So, I think the number 10 position is fine for me. Even on the wing I like to play but the best for me is the 10 position,” he insisted, while explaining why he prefers a central role.

That will finally end the debate about Rele’s best position and he has been showing what he is capable of as a number 10 in recent matches, taking his tally to nine goals in his last 10 games.

Mofokeng scored a brace as Pirates put Arrows to the sword, this coming after he netted a first career hat-trick in the Buccaneers’ 6-0 destruction of TS Galaxy before the international break.

With this kind of form, few will doubt that number 10 is indeed Mofokeng’s best position.
