Mofokeng takes blame after Bafana Bafana’s defeat to Cameroon in AFCON

South Africa’s quest to win their second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in their history suffered a blow on Sunday night after a 2-1 loss to Cameroon who have won it five times.

Bafana Bafana had some great chances to get something from the game, but luack of composure and failure to be clinical in the danger zone cost them a place in the quarter-final.

One of the players who failed to take their scoring opportunities is Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng. The 21-year-old has since shouldered the blame since that moment could have changed the outcome.

He argues the team played well, but failed to capitalise on the chances they had.

We should have continued to work hard

“I think that chance was the one that could have opened the game for us,” the Buccaneers attacker told the media.

“I also take responsibility that I should have scored that chance, but we created a lot of chances, and we should have used our chances. It’s not the first time that we trailed 1-0 and we encouraged each other that we could get a goal.

“We didn’t lose hope because we believed we could progress from the last 16 round. Our spirits were high because the game wasn’t over yet, it had just started.

“We should have continued to work hard and continued to play how we did because I think we had the game in our hands we just needed to use our opportunities,” Mofokeng concluded.

South Africa will now focus on preparations for the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
