Orlando Pirates have disclosed that starlet Relebohile Mofokeng turned down a potential European transfer last year, choosing instead to remain with the club in a bid to win the league for the Buccaneers and their supporters.
This revelation was made on the club’s official website following the confirmation of Mofokeng’s move to Belgian side Royal Union Saint-Gilloise.
According to the statement, Mofokeng had the opportunity to leave for Europe but made a personal commitment to pursue domestic success with Pirates first. The club highlighted this decision as a testament to the young forward’s character.

“Relebohile could have left last year. The interest was there. The door was open,” the club’s statement read. “But what did he do? He chose to stay—not for money, not for comfort, but because he wanted to win the league for this club and for its supporters.”

The club also shared Mofokeng’s words to chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza, which underscored his dedication.
“Chairman, I am not worried about overseas now. I want to give it my all this season and try to win this league for the club. This is my only focus right now. If overseas happens after that, then good, but for now, let me do all I can to make the supporters happy.”

Pirates praised Mofokeng for honouring his quiet promise and expressed confidence in his future success abroad, describing him as a generational talent.
“He made a promise, quietly, the way honest people do. And he kept it,” the club added. “The world will know what Mzansi has known since 2022, that Relebohile Mofokeng is something that comes along once in a generation… We wish Relebohile nothing but the best in this new chapter of his career but more importantly, thank him for everything.”
