Forget AFCON qualifying objective! Mosimane reveals Bafana target that Broos failed to achieve

Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane insists dining with the other big boys in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is not his main objective.

Jingles took over from Hugo Broos who retired after the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States. He had also helped the national team play in back-to-back AFCONS. The closest he came to winning a title was in 2013 when he won bronze in Ivory Coast.

However, the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach insists he is keen on ending Bafana Bafana’s trophy drought by delivering one.

He agues that qualifying for the continental competition to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania is not the main goal.

Mosimane reveals target at Bafana Bafana

“We need a cup. We haven’t won it for how long? It’s too long, right? So, we need a cup. I want to win a cup. I’m not saying I’m going to win it, I want to win it. And that’s why I’m here,” Mosimane told the media.

“You can’t win the cup when you don’t qualify. I mean, you know the levels and the steps that you need to do to get to win the cup. But yeah, that’s the objective, is to try and win a cup,” he added.

On Saturday, Bafana Bafana start their qualifying campaign with a Group D game against Guinea at the Orlando Stadium. It is a massive game that Mosimane’s game have to win to stand a chance of getting their ticket.

Kenya, who have already qualified by virtue of hosting the biennial competition, are also in the group alongside Eritrea.
