Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has confirmed that promising midfielder Thulani Mabaso is making significant strides toward a first-team return following his recent appearance in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC).

The left-footed central midfielder stepped up his rehabilitation on Sunday, featuring in the Glamour Boys’ thrilling 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in their 2026/27 reserve league opener at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu.

Mabaso was integrated into the senior setup last season after playing a key role in the club’s 2024/25 DDC title-winning campaign.

Lengthy injury layoff for Mabaso

He went on to make seven senior appearances across all competitions under former co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze before a lengthy injury cut his 2025/26 season short.

Having spent several months on the sidelines, the youngster was handed valuable game time in the reserve derby to rebuild his match fitness, delivering an encouraging display against the Buccaneers.

Reflecting on the reserve team’s derby triumph, Motaung Jr highlighted the importance of Mabaso’s minutes on the pitch as he targets a spot in the senior matchday squad.

Kaizer Chiefs boss on youngster’s future

“It was truly a gallant effort by the boys in their opening fixture,” Motaung Jr told the club’s media channels.

“We were also happy to see senior team midfielder Thulani Mabaso play his first competitive match since picking up an injury a few months ago. His return means he is getting closer to match readiness for the first team.”
