Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has revealed that discussions are underway over how the family of the late Jayden Adams can be assisted.

Adams passed away this month just days after featuring for Bafana Bafana at the 2026 World Cup and two months after winning the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The circumstances leading to the midfielder’s demise are still not known but his sudden death sent shockwaves within the football fraternity in South Africa.

During his funeral service in Stellenbosch on Saturday, Motsepe confirmed that Sundowns will soon engage the family of Adams on how those he has left behind will be assisted.

Mostepe reveals plans for Adams’ family

“I am very proud that the culture of Mamelodi Sundowns has reflected. I know that there will be other private discussions that the chairman will have with the family,” Motsepe said at the funeral service.

“But it is part of our culture to try and help and contribute. For us as a family, the Motsepe family, we have a huge obligation in all ways possible to try and support and give back, try and assist and in this instance, to try and help the family because Jayden has contributed enormously to the success of Mamelodi Sundowns.”

The Sundowns owner says club chairman Tlhopie Motsepe will soon have a sit-down with the departed midfielder’s loved ones to thrash out the modalities of how they will be helped.

“For us as a family, we have a duty. We have identified football as one of the things where we try to give back to the people of this country,” he added.

Sundowns to mirror Liverpool’s Jota case?

“I am very proud that there were some discussions about Mamelodi Sundowns continuing to see how they can help at least for some time, to help Jayden’s children.”

There have been reports of Sundowns doing something similar to what Premier League side Liverpool did for the family of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who passed away on July 3, 2025 following a car crash in Spain.

Liverpool opted to pay out the remainder of Jota’s contract that runs until the summer of 2027 to his wife Rute Cardoso, fund his three children’s education and permanently retiring his No. 20 shirt.

Adams, who joined Sundowns in January 2025 from Stellenbosch FC, signed a three-and-a-half-year contract that was to run until June 2028.
